Summary of the work
Develop and test features in Scala and TypeScript to help users to transfer digital records to TNA. Configure and deploy AWS services following DevOps principles using Terraform to support those features. Review code written by other developers on the team. Support and provide guidance as required for two junior developers.

ABOUT THE WORK
Early market engagement
The specialist will work with the ‘Transfer Digital Records’ product team. The team are building a product which will enable the secure transfer of selected born digital public records to The National Archives. The service offers tools for content upload, validation and transfer of ownership to the Archive. The primary users of TDR will be transferring public record bodies and courts.The TDR team have completed in-house Discovery and Alpha prototyping phases to determine the scope of the proposed service and released in private Beta in July 2021. They are currently over midway in the Beta public build of the product. The product is due to receive court judgments in April 2022 with a public beta release estimated for June 2022.We require a developer to work on the end-to-end journey of this web based service in order to increase capacity within the team so that the product build remains on track for key milestones.
Who the specialist will work with
The specialist will work with the Digital Selection and Transfer Service Owner, joining the ‘Transfer Digital Records’ product team as a Developer. They will work with developers, user researchers, designers, a technical architect, data specialist, delivery manager and product manager to complete the multi-disciplinary team.

The National Archives, Kew, TW9 4DU; Remote working is possible for this position. Some attendance on site at The National Archives, Kew, London may be required with notice.
Working arrangements
Normal office hours are 9am to 5pm, but flexible working is available by mutual agreement.Embedded into a multi-disciplinary agile product team with excellent and active collaboration via tools including Teams, Slack, Jira and Git.
Security clearance
Baseline security clearance is required with a willingness to undergo SC clearance at a later date

Essential skills and experience

  • Strong ability to create and test software so that it is maintainable

  • Knowledge of development and infrastructure to meet modern standards of security, reliability
Nice-to-have skills and experience
  • Experience building front-end HTML and JavaScript using a progressive enhancement approach
  • Have experience of working within accessibility standards and best practice
  • Translating complex technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Understanding of GDS principles
